Watermelon Juice: It tastes great and so much more….

Watermelon is both a healthy and delicious treat.  I remember eating a slab of it as a kid after a long baseball practice. Not much better than a cold slice of watermelon, then spitting the seeds at your friends.  Boys will be boys after all (if moms let them!!).  But what I didn’t know as a kid I now know as a healthcare practitioner concentrating on nutrition.  That watermelon, a relative of other fruits such as cantaloupe or honeydew, is a powerhouse of health and wellness. In addition, it can be enjoyed on its own or as an addition to a meal in a salad or even grilled (kids love it). Best of all, watermelon has numerous important nutrients that benefit your health and the juice is absolutely out of this world!

Watermelon provides a moderate amount of nutrients and natural glucose essential for energy production. A 100g serving of the fruit contains only 30 calories. Water makes up the bulk of watermelon flesh, accounting for over 90 percent of the weight of the fruit, which explains why it is a great hydrator.

Watermelon is a rich source of vitamins A and C, as well as the essential mineral potassium. Vitamin A helps to promote proper vision, and both vitamins A and C contribute to healthy skin and hair. Potassium helps to regulate your blood pressure.

Watermelon also contains high levels of lycopene, the compound that provides watermelon “meat” its beautiful reddish-pink hue. Lycopene works as an antioxidant in your body, and has been shown to lower risk of heart disease, prostate, skin, cervical, lung and bladder cancer according to Florida State University. Lycopene also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Watermelon has also been shown to decrease muscle soreness post workout.  Watermelon contains the amino acid l-citrulline, which has been shown to protect against muscle soreness and speed recovery from workout, even with delayed onset soreness. Watermelon also contains the compounds cucurbitacin E which block inflammatory production.

A mainstay in the JuiceBoss HQ juice lineup of health and wellness giving nutrition is our Muscle Recovery juice containing watermelon, pineapple, carrot, ginger, turmeric.  Research has shown all of these ingredients to contain high levels of nutrients and anti-oxidants to improve post-workout recovery, decrease soreness and injury, improve hydration and supply health and wellness. They also taste great!

Recommendation: Drink 8-16 oz 30 minutes prior to and after workout.
