Athletes Utilize Chiropractic Care Regularly, Should You?

Chiropractic care aids many aspects of health: proper physical function, improved range of motion, increased strength, decreased pain and an overall sense of wellness and well-being.

Studies estimate that 90 percent of all world-class athletes utilize chiropractic care to increase performance capacities and decrease pain and injury risk.  Every National Football League team relies on chiropractic care. Over 77 percent of athletic trainers of professional sports franchises refer players to a chiropractor for evaluation and treatment.  However, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from regular chiropractic care.

Most people think that a visit to a chiropractor is for problems with their back or neck or maybe for headache sufferers.  According to a study led by Dr. Simon French of the Melbourne University in Australia, most people do visit the chiropractor for these reasons. However other research is showing that people are looking to chiropractic care for other issues with the musculoskeletal system. The numbers show that a large population of these patients are young athletes.  Studies have shown that chiropractic treatment helps athletes recover from injuries without the need for painkilling drugs or the risk of invasive surgery. It is proven that chiropractic treatment is extremely effective in the treatment of sports injuries and getting the athlete back into competition much faster. 

It is a large portion of athletes, and non-athletes, who are seeking chiropractic care to optimize performance, before injuries even occur. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady utilizes chiropractic care to not only improve his health, but to improve his athletic performance.  Brady emphasizes “Chiropractic just makes me feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”

Numerous studies validify the fact that chiropractic care helps athletes achieve an optimal level of performance. A Canadian research team included chiropractic care in the rehabilitation program of 16 injured female long-distance runners. The runners recovered more quickly; seven of them actually scored “personal best” performances while under chiropractic care.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments have been shown to be consistently better than other medical options in reducing the intensity of low back pain and restoring normal spinal function, both for short-term and long-term effects.

An athlete's body, regardless of whether it is a professional or a pee-wee athlete, takes on a ton of different and abnormal stresses. It isn’t only playing the games, but often the worst part is the rigorous workouts and the long and frequent practices that multiply the overall load on the body.  It is really no wonder that athletes often suffer chronic aches and pains, which unfortunately can turn into serious and debilitating injuries. Combine the fact that we are stressing specialization on younger kids and this leads to injuries and problems earlier in life.

As a chiropractor who has 26 years of experience including being a collegiate and professional athletic team doctor, we have been able to see such issues over and over and deal with them in ways that enhance the athlete’s recovery and improve their overall performance and results. Proper spinal alignment and function is the focus of our chiropractic treatment.  This works to maximize performance on and off the field, and also increases the confidence and outlook of the individual athlete.

Chiropractic adjustments allow the body to function at a higher level and as it was designed. If the spine is out of alignment, muscles will spasm creating decreased range of motion and joint function. Restoring normal motion in the spine frees areas of tension and tightness in the back, neck and extremities, reducing pain and improving mobility and function. In addition, regular chiropractic treatment has been shown to improve your exercise form and results. Misalignments throughout the joints have been shown to slow down healing and recovery. Chiropractic adjustments have been proven to directly speed up the recovery process.

In sports, the difference between winning and losing is sometimes measured in microseconds. Athletes can use every increase in strength, speed and flexibility possible.
